Menemsha Sunset
September 1, 2008
I just got back from a week on Martha’s Vineyard. What a week! Good food, beautiful beaches, time with family. It doesn’t get much better. One of my favorite spots is a little old fishing village in Menemsha. It’s known for amazing sunsets and it didn’t disappoint. The sad thing is people flock to see the setting sun but as soon as it drops below the horizon everyone cheers and then they jump in the car and head for home. They miss the best part which is about 10-15 minutes after sunset. That’s when this shot was taken with the sailboats silhouetting the amazing shades of purple and yellow. Jason & Jess's Special Day
July 2, 2008
Once again it was an ominous forecast on Sunday June 29th but the day turned out great. Jason & Jess were fun and relaxed. It was a pleasure to work with them. Here are a few images from the day. Click on read more to view them.

Enjoy!

My Beautiful Wife and My Beautiful 50mm f/1.4
June 23, 2008
Just recently I added the 50mm f/1.4 to my camera bag and I have to say it’s fantastic! Super sharp, lightweight, compact, incredible bokeh, great depth of field. Ok, I’m out of adjectives but if I could think of more I would use them to describe this lens. I love it! Almost as much as my beautiful wife. Click read more to see a great image of her taken with the 50mm f/1.4. Enjoy!

Nicola & John Engagement Shoot
June 22, 2008
I just shot a nice engagement shoot at the Tower Hill Botanical Gardens in Boylston, MA. It’s a really beautiful spot and Nicola and John were just as beautiful together. It didn’t go off without a hitch though. When we arrived the gardens were closed for a private event. Conveniently the gate was left open, so we drove in and got some great shots without being noticed. Here are a few images from the day. Click on Read more. Enjoy!

Rick & Robins Wedding Day
June 1, 2008
Here are a few images from Rick & Robins wedding day. We dodged torrential downpours and hail in the forecast. It was a fun day, Rick and Robin were a pleasure to work with and we got some great images. Check ‘em out by clicking on “read more”.

Lens Rental Options
May 28, 2008
I know you will agree that everyone loves "fast glass". This typically means any lens with an aperture of f2.8 or faster and usually throughout the entire focal range. For example the Nikon 70-200VR f2.8. Click here for more info on this lens. This lens cost's about $1500 new. Pretty steep huh? So what if you want to use fast glass but can't afford it. Do you settle on the quality? Well, there are some great new services that let you rent these expensive "pro" lenses at a very reasonably rate. Here are two that I know of.

The first one is called ZipLens and the other is Lensprotogo. Both these companies offer a great service for lens rentals and have any easy ordering interface online. They ship the lens right to you, provide you a return shipping label and you ship it back in the same box. All of this is included in the rental rate. I think that's slick. It couldn't be easier and they have all the professional lenses in stock that you could want. So are you shooting an upcoming wedding or event and don't want to spend the money on expensive lenses? Try them out.

Sunrise or Sunset?
May 26, 2008
So what’s your preference, sunset or sunrise? This is a sunrise shot in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard. I woke up at 4:45am grabbed my gear and headed east toward the lighthouse. When I arrived the sky was a deep ominous blue that progressively brightened and became less dramatic. As the minutes passed I thought this sunrise would be uneventful. Then I saw some ripples forming in the clouds. As the sun continued to rise the light hit these ripples and that is the capture you see above. I didn’t want to draw attention to the lighthouse and take away from the beautiful sky but I wanted to know it was there. Therefore the slightly silhouetted structure adds a nice sense of place.

Who doesn’t love “The Vineyard”!

Flying Seagull
May 2, 2008
This was a fun shot. I was strolling a quit beach on Chappaquiddick. A small island within Martha’s Vineyard. I strapped on the 70-300 VR lens and was following three birds with bright red beaks down the beach as they were playing in the water. I still don’t know the species but they captured my attention. As I was stalking them, I noticed this seagull out of the corner of my eye. He flew dangerously close to my head. I turned quickly and snapped this image in an instant. Click “read more” to see the image.

That was fun!

Ipod Slideshow
April 26, 2008
Hey, are you looking for a cool way show off your portfolio to clients. Have you ever been frustrated when you meet a potential client and you don't have an album handy to show. Of course your web presence is invaluable and you always want to direct people there but what if you want to "wow" someone on the spot or if someone asks to see a portfolio of your work. I just recently loaded my wedding portfolio onto my Ipod and showed it to a potential client. They loved it! When They asked to see some samples of my work, I whipped out the Ipod and in two clicks, started a slideshow that really impressed them. I will be shooting their wedding in the fall.

Pretty slick huh?

This is a really great way to present your images and if your always conscious of interacting and networking with people, you may have more opportunities than you think to use this as a means of presentation. Try it out!

Equipment Reviews
April 18, 2008
For all you gear heads out there, and I admit I am one, where do you go for reviews? I am sure all of you want to be informed consumers. So, when you're planning to upgrade that dslr body or add some fast glass to your collection, where do you turn?

Here are a couple of sites with comprehensive reviews. Please feel free to add your comments with some favorites of your own. For camera bodies dpreview.com is probably the standard with extensive reviews on point and shoots cameras as well as more advanced dslr models. You can read their in depth review on a product with specs, image comparisons, and samples or you can read owners opinions but don't underestimate the value of your local camera shop. Hands on, feel, ergonomics and getting a feel for the menus has many times been make or break for me.

How about Glass? I have found two sites to be helpful in this regard. fredmiranda.com and slrgear.com. Slrgear.com has extensive reviews as well as owner reviews and a nice feature in their reviews is that they often do comparisons to third party lenses (Sigma, Tamron & Tokina). Fredmiranda.com does not do their own reviews but the photographic community there is knowledgeable and provides excellent owner opinions.

Well those are a few of the resources I've used in the past with success. In a future post I will talk more about resource sites and photographic communities.
